The OPP are warning residents after a recent report of another new scam in the area. This latest scam reported involves a victim who was contacted by an individual who was posing as the CEO of BitCoin. The scammer informed the victim that by purchasing BitCoin, they would receive a return of 130% and then proceeded to encourage the victim to allow them access to their banking information and credit card information. The scammer was able to gain access to the information and by doing so, took more than $30,000 from the victim.
This latest version is just a new spin on an old scam that the OPP have seen time and time again, where scammers use a phone or computer to communicate with a victim before a financial transaction occurs. They are reminding the community to be vigilant when you are requested to send money or gift cards to anyone that you do not know.
