Millions of people across the globe are striking today in the name of climate change. Elgin County residents gathered at St. Thomas City Hall this afternoon to let their voices be heard and to stand with those trying to make a difference. These youth-led climate strikes are meant to bring awareness of the climate change crisis to political leaders ahead of next week’s United Nations climate summit. Our local strikers are trying to show elected leaders and candidates here in St. Thomas, across the province and across Canada that there is an urgent need for them to take immediate action to fight climate change.
Organizer of the St. Thomas climate strike Julie Berry says she knew she had to be apart of the day when she found out about the worldwide strike.
Berry says she believes that if anything came out of today’s strike, its that there is still hope.
Berry says they will be coming back to City Hall on Friday and will be planning a huge movement for May of 2020. The climate strikes across the world will be taking place from September 20th -27th.
