The Alzheimer Society Elgin-St.Thomas has officially launched their Dementia Friendly Community program. What originally started as the “Blue Umbrella” program in 2016 has since turned into the Dementia Friendly Community program for Elgin-St.Thomas. So far the program has 10 participating businesses and organizations throughout Elgin County who have gone through training with the Alzheimer Society to better understand dementia, in order to assist their customers further.
Each participating location is provided with a decal for their front door so that people living with dementia as well as their caregivers will be able to easily identify businesses and organizations that are apart of the Dementia Friendly Community.
Public Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society Elgin-St.Thomas, Maggie Scanlon says the purpose of the program, is to create an inclusive community in Elgin County.
Scanlon says that they want to make sure that enough education about dementia is getting out into the community, so that we are creating an inclusive environment for people suffering from the disease.
