Working smoke alarms helped a Balaclava Street homeowner escape safely after being woken up to a house fire early Tuesday morning. The call for the fire at 195 Balaclava Street came in just before 4 a.m. The homeowner was woken up by the smoke alarm and a house full of smoke.
They were able to get out of the home safely and call 911 from the neighbour’s house. Fire fighters put out the fire that they believe started in the basement. The homeowner who was the only person home was taken to hospital where she was treated and released for minor injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire department says that this is another example of the importance of making sure you have working smoke alarms in your home.
