CN Rail is bringing awareness to the dangers that railways can create with their CN Rail Safety Week. CN Rail Safety Week is taking place this week and will run until September 29th.
myFM spoke with inspector Scott McCallum from the CN Police who says the main purpose of the safety week is to help save lives.
McCallum says his top three safety tips to remember are to never trespass on CN property, which includes taking shortcuts across the tracks. He also warns that any time is train time, meaning a train could come on any track from any direction at all hours of the day and night. And lastly he reminds us that trains may seem to be travelling slower than they are and appear further away than they are, which is why drivers should never try to get around an active crossing.
CN says that on average, there are 2,311 crossing accidents and 1,011 trespassing accidents where pedestrians are hit in North America each year.
