The OPP’s Fall Seat Belt Campaign is currently underway and the police have revealed some statistics to emphasis the campaign’s importance. 42 people who were not buckled up safely have died in collisions on OPP-patrolled roads this year alone. This number is up 20% compared to 35 seat-belt related deaths around this time last year.
For the Fall Seat Belt Campaign, officers are reminding drivers and passengers of the dangers of not buckling up. In the past 5 years, the OPP has investigated 233 motor vehicle deaths that were linked to a lack of seat belt use. They also report that of those 233 deaths, 103 of the unbuckled occupants were ejected from the vehicle.
During the campaign officers will be highly visible as they conduct education and enforcement initiatives aimed at getting drivers and passengers to do their part to save lives by buckling up and ensuring children are properly restrained.
