A 72 year old St. Thomas woman is lucky to be alive following a collision with a train. The St. Thomas Police report that the incident happened around 8 p.m. last night when the driver stopped for the red flashing rail lights at the crossing just south of Kains Street. It was then reported that witnesses indicated that the driver proceeded to try and race across the tracks before the train came.
The eastbound train made impact with the car on the passenger side of the vehicle, pushing it for a short distance along the tracks. The train conductor quickly activated the emergency stop equipment, bringing the train and the vehicle to a stop approximately 100 feet east of the railway crossing.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident however the woman is being charged with Failing to Give Way to Railway Equipment at Road Crossing and Disobey Railway Crossing Signal.
