The 401 eastbound is closed between Iona Road and Union Road as the OPP continue to investigate a 5 vehicle fatal collision on Friday morning (October 18). The OPP says that the collision involved two tractor-trailers, a 5 tonne commercial truck and 2 passenger vehicles occurred around 11 a.m.
This is an update to our original story where the early information indicated that it was a 4 vehicle fatal collision.
The collision occurred when the vehicles were all merging into a single lane because of the upcoming construction. Emergency crews including the air ambulance responded. One person was taken to hospital by air ambulance and another by land both with serious injuries.
One person from a passenger vehicle died from the collision. The OPP will be keeping the eastbound 401 lanes closed into this evening as they continue their investigation. Eastbound traffic will be directed off at Iona Road and following the Emergency Detour Route signs to get back on the highway.
