The St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital has a brand new life-sized “Tree of Life” to commemorate patients who have donated their organs or tissue. The 3-dimensional tree is located on the wall of the second floor in the newly renamed “Hallway of Heroes” which connects the Intensive Care Unit and the Surgical Suites.
The tree has 120 hand carved leaves on it which represents the current number of organ and tissue donations at STEGH.
Hospital Donation Physician and Intensivist at STEGH Dr. Fahad Sheikh says that the tree is meant to honour the organ and tissue donors
Dr. Sheikh says that the location of the tree and renaming of the hallway are significant as it is the final journey that the donors make. A leaf will be added to the tree for every organ and tissue donation going forward.
