Ontarians will be joining Canadians across the country in marking Remembrance Day this morning. Thousands are expected to gather at the National War Memorial in Ottawa to honour those who fought — and in many cases died — to defend Canada and its way of life.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Governor General Julie Payette will lay wreaths in Ottawa, as will this year’s Silver Cross Mother, Reine Samson Dawe, whose youngest son, Captain Matthew Dawe, was killed in Afghanistan in 2007.
A Remembrance ceremony will also be held at the Ontario Veterans Memorial at Queen’s Park beginning at 10:45 a.m. Many smaller ceremonies and parades will be held around the province to mark the solemn occasion. Ceremonies taking place in Elgin County today include…
– Springfield: Springfield Cenotaph 9 a.m.
– St. Thomas: Veterans Memorial Garden 10:30 a.m.
– Aylmer: Aylmer Cenotaph 10:45 a.m.
– West Lorne: West Lorne Cenotaph 11:00 a.m.
