The St. Thomas Police Service have arrested a 34 year old St. Thomas man in relation to the recent string of arson attempts in the City. The investigation that began in late October saw approximately 12 reports over 3 weeks regarding random fires that were quickly lit by a suspect before they fled the area.
It is reported that the suspect would target areas where loose papers or combustible material had been left such as garbage cans, recycle bins or stacks of paper piled inside apartment complex doors. The Street Crimes Unit and the Criminal Investigations Branch worked together to address the ongoing safety concern for the City and as a result, identified the suspect.
The 34 year old St. Thomas man has been accused of setting 2 of the reported fires. The police do report that at this time the random fires have stopped and they are satisfied that there is no further risk to the public in relation to the arson attempts.
