St. Thomas City Council was shocked and surprised with the repair costs at the St. Thomas Police Station. Council received a report on Monday night that outlined 20 repairs this year which totaled $179,508.
The nature of the repairs varied from $7,000 to repair a leak in the skylight, $2,700 as a result of the basement flooding and just over $4,000 to fix heating related issues among others.
The one year warranty on the building expired in June of 2018 and staff say they have exhausted all warranty options to recoup costs of the repairs.
City Councillor Jeff Kohler says that he is very surprised that none of the individual parts are even covered through warranty
Kohler’s shock and surprise was shared by most of his fellow councillors.
A combined $7,200 was spent on repairs related to the building’s generator which had councillors surprised given that the building just opened in 2017.
Director of Parks, Recreation and Property Management Ross Tucker says that while the building is new, the generator is not.
Tucker says that a new generator will be recommended as a capital project in the near future.
$145,585 of the total costs came from two items that were paid for in a separate City budget and not the police budget.
