Elgin-Middlesex-London Member of Parliament Karen Vecchio was in total shock when she first learned that Andrew Scheer would be stepping down as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. Vecchio says that she felt that they had been working well together since parliament resumed but respects and supports him for putting his family first.
Scheer has said that he will remain the party leader until a new one is in place and will maintain his MP seat.
Vecchio says that while Scheer is stepping down, the party is still full of leaders.
Vecchio also clarified reports that Scheer is stepping down as a result of using party funds to pay for his children’s private schooling.
Vecchio says that the party was providing funding for the difference of the cost of schooling since relocating to Ottawa which was done legitimately through the party’s CAO Dustin Van Vugt.
As for who could potentially be the party’s next leader Vecchio would not speculate and said that she would leave that up to the National Council. She did however say that it is not a position that she would be putting her name forward for.
