An Alzheimer Society flag is now flying high at City Hall to honour Alzheimer Awareness Month. Members of the Alzheimer Society Elgin- St. Thomas joined Mayor Joe Preston, Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Karen Vecchio, local first responders and the public for a flag raising ceremony on Wednesday (Jan 8).
The purpose of Alzheimer Awareness Month is to raise awareness about alzheimer and dementia as well as the stigma surrounding the disease.
Public Education Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society Elgin- St. Thomas Maggie Scanlon says it means a lot to have local dignitaries help raise aware for the disease.
During the flag raising ceremony Major Joe Preston also announced that the city now has the ability to change the colour of St. Thomas’s famous “Jumbo” statue and stated that Jumbo will be purple for the remainder of the week to honour Alzheimer Awareness Month.
