Today myFM is celebrating local coaches and the impact they’ve had on athletes in Elgin County with our Hooray for Coaches Day feature, presented by Briwood Farm Market.
We spoke with Derek Brooks who has been involved in St. Thomas Minor Baseball for over 15 years. Brooks began coaching baseball when his kids showed an interest in playing and hasn’t looked back since. Over 15 years later, Brooks’s kids are aged out of Minor Baseball but he continues to do what he loves and is currently coaching a 13 U team.
Brooks says one of the most rewarding parts of the job is getting to see first hand the improvement of the players over the years.
When taking with Brook’s we asked him what his biggest accomplishments were as a coach and he said simply getting to see the successes and accomplishments of the kids he coaches.
Brooks says the biggest piece of advice he can give to those thinking about coaching is to just be patient and enjoy what you’re doing.
