Today myFM is celebrating local coaches and the impact they’ve had on athletes in Elgin County with our Hooray for Coaches Day feature, presented by Briwood Farm Market.
We spoke with Trevor Armstrong who is a Special Olympics coach here in St. Thomas. Armstrong currently coach’s basketball and floor hockey and has been involved with coaching Special Olympics since 2014.
Armstrong says he first got involved after he was invited to come and watch a practice and ended up enjoying it so much that he asked to join the coaching staff.
Armstrong says that those thinking about getting involved in coaching with the Special Olympics should start out by attending a tournament.
Looking back on his last couple of years of coaching, Armstrong says his biggest accomplishment was seeing his basketball team compete at the provincial level.
Armstrong says that he enjoys the position so much and as long as there are athletes out there that need coaching, he will continue to do so.
