The reconstruction of the east end of Elm Street will result in a roadway cross-section identical to work completed last year at the west end .
Prepare for more disruption along Elm Street this year, only further east this time. Beginning mid-April, reconstruction of the roadway will begin between Peach Tree Boulevard and Centennial Avenue. According to the senior technologist for St. Thomas, Terry Koning, The new Harvest Run subdivision in the east end of St. Thomas is one of the factors leading to the reconstruction of Elm Street. The subdivision will require a new left-turn lane along Elm Street and that will be incorporated in the new cross-section of the roadway which will see the widening the roadway to allow for two driving lanes, a dual left-turn lane, two bike lanes, new curbs and gutters and a sidewalk promenade on both sides of Elm Street. The winning tender bid was from J-AAR Excavating in the amount of $1.3 million, excluding HST. Final cost, including contingency, will be in the $1.5 million range. The city will receive $100,000 from Central Elgin as the sidewalk on the north side of Elm Street will be of benefit to residents of that municipality. The project is scheduled for completion toward the end of June.
