With Elgin county council resolving to support a palliative care hospice for St. Thomas and Elgin through non-financial measures, where does that leave a monetary pledge from a pair of community donors?
Last month, Laura Sherwood, director of hospice partnerships with St. Joseph’s Health Care Society, indicated there is a community commitment from two major donors of $2 million, based on financial support from both the city and county.
Last week, Sherwood told myFM she will meet with county officials next month for clarification.
Sherwood added that non-financial support from the county may not necessarily prove as a deterrent to fundraising efforts.
Sherwood hopes next month’s meeting will bring forth other creative ways to work together to advance the project that has already received provincial funding.
St. Thomas city council has not yet indicated whether they will support the Hospice for Elgin financially. Funding for the facility was not included in this year’s budget.
