Last week, Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Karen Vecchio was elected chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women. It’s the second time Vecchio has been elected to serve in this capacity.
She is also the Shadow Minister for Women and Gender Equality and, as such, there is common ground with her committee work and the priorities of committee members.
Vecchio says her duties will include offering critical input to legislation and providing oversight on government budgetary processes. She notes one of the critical areas is the rural-urban divide when it comes to women’s issues.
Vecchio plans to begin with the committee’s work right away to delve into issues she says will “inform policy decision and create a forum for constructive conversations.”
Vecchio says she looks forward to chairing the committee in a way that “reflects a spirit of collaboration and accountability.”
