At a mayor’s lunch in January, St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston made a pledge that the people of St. Thomas will be moving around the city in better fashion by the end of the year.
City council began that process Monday when members unanimously endorsed the St. Thomas Transit Strategic Plan and authorized staff to begin implementation of the recommendations later this year and into 2021.
The first signs of change: a 15-minute headway on Talbot Street and longer hours of operation including evening and Sunday service.
The extended hours of operation will be run with what is known as demand-responsive transit using buses and other vehicles operating not on fixed routes or timetables but running based on customer demand.
Other components of the strategic plan, including the possibility of a three-year regional transit pilot project are awaiting federal funding.
