As people prepare for Daylight Savings Time this Sunday, the St. Thomas Fire Department are hoping people will use this time to also check their smoke detectors. Daylight Savings Time will be taking place this Sunday (March 8) at 2 a.m., meaning everyone must move their clocks forward 1 hour.
Although many clocks including cell phones, tablets, and computers will most likely change automatically, analog clocks, watches, ovens, and microwaves may need to be changed by hand.
Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun says that Daylight Savings is a perfect time to check to make sure that smoke detectors are still working, and if necessary replace the batteries.
Destun says CO detectors should also be checked to make sure they are still working as well as change the battery backups if they are plug in detectors. This time also serves as a good reminder for homeowners to get all fuel-burning appliances inspected to prevent CO leaks.
