Premier Doug Ford’s declaration this morning of a state of emergency was the next logical step in attempting to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Ontario, according to Dr. Joyce Lock. She is the medical officer of health with Southwestern Public Health and stresses we need to keep society running but, at the same time, that has to be done in a way that does not disrupt day-to-day life any more than is necessary.
Lock says the move is an attempt to run a fine line between keeping our society running and not letting ourselves getting into a case where too many people get sick at the same time.
With incidents now of community spread cases of COVID-19 in Toronto, she says, we have to expect that soon could be the case in St. Thomas and Elgin.
Lock advises if you have any symptoms of a cold, then stay at home. She adds it is often not easy to determine whether an individual is suffering from a common cold or the new coronavirus.
Dr. Lock has good, commonsense advice for residents of St. Thomas and Elgin and you can hear our extended conversation with her here.
