The City of St. Thomas and the County of Elgin this morning (Saturday) declared a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic. St. Thomas mayor Joe Preston says the decision was made to issue the declaration jointly to protect the health and safety of all individuals in the city and county.
Dave Mennill, Elgin County Warden, adds by declaring a state of emergency, the city and all municipalities in the county are attempting to get ahead of the COVID-19 curve.
While the province declared a state of emergency earlier this week, Preston stressed the need for neighbouring municipalities to work collectively.
We don’t take a declaration of emergency lightly, stressed Preston. This is a clear call to action, we have to pay attention right now.
