Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced changes to the emergency wage subsidy for businesses and the Canada Summer Jobs program for students. Trudeau says businesses were previously asked to show a 30% decrease in revenue from the year before to qualify for the wage subsidy.
The Prime Minister says businesses now only need to show a 15% decrease for March and can use January and February as reference points.
Trudeau says charitable organizations can choose to include or exclude government subsidies when calculating the loss of revenue. The Prime Minister says they will provide up to $847 per week for each employee impacted and will be retroactive to March 15th. In regards to the Canada Summer Jobs program, Trudeau says they will provide up to a 100% subsidy to hire students and extend the working time frame until the winter.
The Prime Minister says this means food banks who are now offering deliveries can hire students to help out during the global health crisis.
