Spring is traditionally the start of road construction season across the province and it began in St. Thomas with the start of April. Only to abruptly come to a halt. Major undertakings such as the remedial work on the St. George Street bridge and a rebuild of the east end of Elm Street have been put on hold through the provincial government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Justin Lawrence, City of St. Thomas director of engineering, explains none of the city’s projects are considered critical at this time.
Lawrence says routine infrastructure maintenance and repairs with city crews will continue.
Lawrence says work on the four projects will begin again once the state of emergency, extended Tuesday to May 12, is lifted or amended by the province.
