Asserting they remain relentless in their resolve, the Church of God in Aylmer plans to continue with their drive-in services in spite of the threat of charges by Aylmer Police. On Tuesday, Police Chief Zvonko Horvat said he is awaiting a recommendation from the Crown Attorney’s office on whether to proceed with charges. Speaking on behalf of the Church of God, Pastor Elmer Hildebrandt says, based on legal advice, the three drive-in services held so far are not in violation of any COVID-19 emergency restrictions.
Lisa Bildy, a staff lawyer with the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, suggests the stand off between police and the church has become a political matter.
Hildebrandt says provinces across Canada and countries around the world are endorsing drive-in services as a temporary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
