Not unlike the return of Major League baseball last night, St. Thomas will not go the entire summer without the sound of a bat meeting the ball.
At a special meeting last night, council approved the use of the Doug Tarry Complex and Cardinal Field for organized baseball on what will be a much abbreviated season for various recreational leagues.
However, cooling off in Jaycees Pool will just be wishful thinking no matter the heat and humidity.
Mayor Joe Preston said the projected $70,000 cost of operating the pool for the month of August, hiring lifeguards, part-time staff for pool maintenance and COVID-19 restrictions proved too formidable.
As for house league soccer, the St. Thomas Soccer Club is going to operate a limited schedule beginning August 8th and running for eight weeks with divisions from U-8 to U-18 playing weekends at Parkside Collegiate Institute.
Preston added because many residents are visiting Pinafore Park for exercise and to enjoy the outdoors, the washrooms will be opened by the beginning of August.
