St. Thomas city council is expected to approve a face covering bylaw at its next meeting Monday afternoon. The bylaw mirrors the one enacted by the County of Elgin yesterday that came into effect today. It supports the letter of instruction issued at the end of last month by Southwestern Public Health requiring the use of face coverings by individuals inside buildings where there is access to the public.
The bylaw will allow the city to make additional resources available for enforcement of the letter of instruction through bylaw enforcement officers and city police.
City manager Wendell Graves notes the primary focus is education, however when it has been determined there has been no regard for face covering requirements, provincial offence tickets will be issued.
