Southwestern Public Health is reporting that two local mosquito traps have tested positive for West Nile Virus, including one in Aylmer. The health unit says that the other positive test comes out of Tavistock and they are the second and third traps to produce a positive test in the Southwestern Public Health region this year.
West Nile Virus is a disease transmitted to humans by mosquitoes throughout Ontario, with most individuals bitten by an infected mosquito showing no symptoms.
Of those who show symptoms, most will experience mild illness including headache, body ache, fever, nausea, vomiting and rash on chest, back or stomach.
Tips to protecting yourself from mosquito bites include using insect repellent when you are outdoors, covering up exposed skin, and cleaning up any mosquito breeding sites around the home including standing water, regularly.
