It didn’t take long for new Conservative leader Erin O’Toole to make a key move within the party. And, it has an important local connection. O’Toole announced today (Wednesday) that Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Karen Vecchio will serve as the Deputy Houser Leader of the Official Opposition.
Vecchio says to be chosen to be part of the leadership team is an ecstatic moment for her.
She went on to explain some of the duties of the Deputy House Leader.
In a statement, Vecchio added, “I am energized to continue my work ensuring that this Minority Liberal government is held to account.”
She noted it is a vote of confidence on the part of O’Toole, allowing her to “fight for Canadians every day both in my capacity as MP for Elgin-Middlesex-London and as the Deputy House Leader.”
Vecchio, who was first elected in 2015, has served as the Shadow Minister for Women and Gender Equality (and as Chair of the Standing Committee on the Status of Women – a role which she has held since 2017).
Vecchio will assume her new role and as a member of the official Opposition leadership team when Parliament resumes on September 23.
She will work with new House Leader, Quebec MP Gerard Deltell.
