The province is looking to expand the list of items you can put in the green bin.
Jeff Yurek, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London and Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks made the announcement Wednesday.
It’s looking for feedback on several proposed measures to reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills.
The plan includes recommending municipalities accept certain compostable packaging and other products, such as coffee pods.
The province also says it wants to encourage businesses to innovate in the way they package and process certain products.
“Consumers and businesses want to cut down on the amount of waste they create by composting food and other organic materials, but with programs and services varying from community to community, there is a lot of inconsistency and confusion about how to do this,” said Yurek.”Our proposal provides greater clarity and encourages innovative compostable products and packaging, so we can help businesses and the public make better decisions about packaging and food waste in order to keep it out of our landfills.”
