A controversial motion put forth by Thames Valley District School Board trustee Jake Skinner failed to make the grade at last night’s (Tuesday) board meeting. Skinner was looking to hold off on construction of an $8.7 million elementary school for Belmont – already approved by the province – in hopes of securing a larger school housing 507 students. Central Elgin Ward 5 Coun. Fiona Wynn stressed any delay could jeopardize construction.
Last November, trustees voted to keep New Sarum and Springfield elementary schools open, conditional on construction of a new school in Belmont. The two schools had been earmarked for closing this year.
Coun. Wynn added an incredible amount of resources have been expended in securing the new school.
With no seconder, trustee Skinner’s motion was not put to a vote.
