Late fines are now a thing of the past at the St. Thomas Public Library.
Our local library is taking a huge step in providing equitable and accessible library service to the community by no longer charging late fines on overdue items.
Effective today, all overdue fines will no longer be applied for books, movies, magazines, and more at the library, with old fines on library accounts being wiped clean.
“Many libraries are making the transition to a fine free model of service,” said Heather Robinson, CEO of St. Thomas Public Library. “Fines do not actually stop people from returning items late, but late fines can stop people from using the library. It’s important to us that everyone in our community has equitable access to our materials and resources.”
Those that lose or damaged items will still be charged however.
Visitors who would like to consider their fines as donations to the library are encouraged to “pay their fines forward” by making a donation to the library.
