The St. Thomas Police Criminal Investigations Unit has been called in after a resident was victimized by a phone scam, resulting in the loss of nearly $20,000.
Police report that in late November, the victim received a call from a 1-877 number where the female caller identified herself as her niece who then passed the phone to a male claiming to be a police officer.
STP say that in this scam, the caller tells the victim that a family member has been arrested and requires cash be sent for bail. The victim was requested to send the money via mail to an address falsely held out to be a bail bond supervisor.
On 2 additional occasions the victim was again contacted, the story evolved into more charges, and requested money be sent to secure bail.
The Criminal Investigations Unit continues to investigate the matter.
