With Premier Doug Ford announcing yesterday the province will go into lockdown on Boxing Day, he stressed the action is necessary to preserve capacity in the healthcare system. Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek notes the steady increase in cases could lead to more hospitalizations and cancelled surgeries, as was the case earlier this year.
With several days still to go before lockdown restrictions begin, Ontario reported this morning 22-hundred and two new cases of COVID-19. Another 21 people have died. Ontario will go into lockdown on Saturday and Yurek stresses the success of the lockdown depends on each individual doing their part during the 28-day shutdown.
Ontario’s health advisors say tough lockdowns lasting a month or so could cut the daily cases significantly. If that is the case in the Southwestern Public Health coverage area, Yurek says we could move back into the Green-Prevent Zone at the end of the lockdown.
The lockdown will shut all non-essential businesses and ban indoor gatherings, while extending the winter break for schools by a week.
