There is now widespread community transmission of the coronavirus in the Southwestern Public Health coverage area, says the region’s medical officer of health.
Dr. Joyce Lock outlined the status of COVID-19 cases at Thursday’s board meeting.
Dr. Lock added the province’s decision last week to defer in-class learning until at least Jan. 25 for elementary school students was the right call, otherwise classrooms would end up being closed every time there is a new case reported in a school.
She says the province’s COVID-19 shutdown which came into effect Boxing Day was a “necessary intervention.”
Dr. Lock cautioned board members, “Even if we manage to get everybody vaccinated this year, COVID is not something that we can leave and forget about in the immediate future.”
