Ontario is postponing March break until the week of April 12th to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says the decision was based on the advice of the province’s chief medical officer and other experts.
Lecce spoke about the move with myFM.
The move isn’t sitting well with the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, who says postponing March Break to April is another example of the government making a unilateral decision that has no clear rationale or basis from experts.
Lecce says he understands the struggle for some teachers but this is the best move for safety.
He says it’s critical to avoid a repeat of the spike in youth-related COVID-19 cases that occurred over the winter break.
Lecce adds the province continues to advise residents not to travel given the increase in new variants.
