The province is reporting 4,505 new COVID-19 cases this morning with 32 deaths while Southwestern Public Health is reporting a dozen new cases. Forty cases were resolved. There was one new death, a St. Thomas man in his 60s, which brings the death toll to 76 since the pandemic began.
There are four new cases in St. Thomas and one in Central Elgin.
Three hundred and forty-three of the confirmed cases involve variants of concern, with 80 cases still active.
There are 159 ongoing cases in the health unit’s coverage area with 52 in St. Thomas, 40 in Woodstock, 23 in Tillsonburg, eight in Ingersoll and Norwich, five in Bayham and Zorra, four in Dutton-Dunwich, three in Aylmer and Blandford-Blenheim; two in Central Elgin, West Elgin and East Zorra-Tavistock and one each in Malahide and SW Oxford.
Three residents and two staff members at Caressant Care, Bonnie Place in St. Thomas have tested positive.
Four individuals are hospitalized, none in ICU. Of the cases hospitalized since the pandemic began, 34.2 per cent were admitted to the ICU.
One hundred and nineteen of the cases are individuals under the age of 50, of those 43 are under the age of 20.
The number of resolved cases is 3,040.
Through April 17 – the latest data available from the health unit – 32,229 individuals have been vaccinated by SWPH, with 30,158 of those having received their first dose.
There are 75.2 ongoing confirmed cases per 100,000 population in the SWPH region as compared to 203.5 per 100,000 in the Middlesex-London Health Unit region. The crude rate for St. Thomas is 133.6 cases per 100,000 population and Aylmer has 40 cases per 100,000.
The assessment centre at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital undertook 239 tests on Wednesday. The West Elgin Community Health Centre did 41 on Wednesday.
