They say the average person walks more than 10,000 steps a day, but what if taking just 13,000 steps throughout the month of May was enough to help raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society?
Well that’s exactly what they’re asking of participants of this year’s IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in support of the 13,000 people living with alzheimer’s and dementia in Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford Counties.
Maggie Scanlon, Public Education Coordinator with the Alzheimer Society of Elgin-St. Thomas says participants will have the entire month to get their steps in, in whatever form they chose to do so.
Scanlon says that this is a major fundraiser for them locally.
COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted those living with dementia and their families. In Elgin and St. Thomas, the Alzheimer Society has provided counselling, education, and recreation to more than 600 new clients since the pandemic began.
Scanlon adds that, unfortunately that number will continue to grow.
