Ontario is pledging 10 million dollars to identify and investigate burial sites on the grounds of former residential schools across the province.
Premier Doug Ford announced the funds Tuesday, noting it’s important that all Ontarians know of the dark history in this country.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission have identified 12 locations of unmarked burial sites in Ontario, but the province says there are likely more.
Ford says they’ll be working closely with with Indigenous leaders in order to establish the processes.
The province says the money will also go toward culturally appropriate mental health supports for residential school survivors and communities.
This comes after the discovery of what are believed to be the remains of 215 children at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.
