What began with a fundraising concert in 2002 took a massive step forward today (Wednesday) in a picturesque meadow overlooking Waterworks Park. What is to become the home of Hospice of Elgin, a 10-bed compassionate community to serve St. Thomas and all of Elgin county.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston took great care to describe the setting, just north of South Edgeware Road, west of Msgr. Morrison Catholic School.
Construction is expected to begin next March with completion scheduled for March of 2023. Cost of construction is estimated at $7.6 million.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek described the 10-bed hospice as truly “a community project.”
Elgin county is the only area in southwestern Ontario without a hospice.
Calling it just the beginning, Dan Kelly, representing the Hospice of Elgin committee and local dignitaries, spoke of the coming transformation of a tranquil meadow into a much-needed palliative care facility when it opens in 2023.
The facility with 10 respite beds and support for caregivers to be located overlooking Waterworks Park is expected to provide care to over 500 individuals and families each year.
It will feature private suites with 24/7 expert care in a welcoming, home-like setting.
