One thing about fishing, you never know what you’ll snag. That was the case Sunday morning when Steve Posthumus of Aylmer and his 10-year-old grandson Brandon Bastien went magnet fishing searching for anything metallic. Steve describes what his grandson pulled out of the water.
Steve immediately called Elgin OPP.
Brandon’s first reaction was “Wow.”
Elgin OPP moved people out of the area in case what appeared to be a mortar shell stamped with the date October, 1954 proved far more dangerous than a few sharp hooks.
The mortar shell is being sent to the Department of National Defence in Ottawa where, if necessary, it will be denotated.
