It’s Federal Election Day, meaning it’s your chance to cast your vote to help shape the future of Elgin-Middlesex-London and the Country.
As we prepare to cast our votes, myFM is giving a look back at our local riding’s history.
The riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London was first introduced to the region in 1996, created during the redistribution of Elgin—Norfolk, Lambton—Middlesex, and London—Middlesex ridings.
The 94,026 eligible voters in the riding are drawn from Aylmer, Bayham, Central Elgin, Dutton/Dunwich, London, Malahide, Southwold, St. Thomas, Thames Centre, through to West Elgin.
Although the riding has traditionally been “Blue”, the first 2 terms saw Liberal Gar Knutson as the local MP from 1997-2004.
Conservative Joe Preston would go on to win the seat and sit as MP from 2004-2015, before fellow Conservative and incumbent Karen Vecchio was elected.
That brings us to today, where 6 candidates are vying for a seat in the House of Commons from Elgin-Middlesex-London.
That includes…
Michael Hopkins- Christian Heritage Party of Canada
Karen Vecchio- Conservative Party of Canada
Amanda Stark- Green Party of Canada
Afeez Ajibowu- Liberal Party of Canada
Katelyn Cody- New Democratic Party
Chelsea Hillier- People’s Party of Canada
Remember that polls are open from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
