A Ryan Nichols power-play goal with less than three minutes to play lifted the London Nationals to a 4-3 win over St. Thomas in the Stars’ season-opener at the Joe Thornton Community Centre.
The Stars had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game on goals from Jack Weber and Brenden Cattrysse only to have the Nats score three straight to build a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Maddox Amaral pulled St. Thomas even early in the third before Nichols clinched the win for London, who badly outshot St. Thomas 49-24. Owen Willmore went the distance in net for the Stars.
Willmore spent the 2019-20 season with the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs AAA Minor Midget and was selected in the 14th round (279th overall) by London Knights in 2020 OHL Priority Draft.
Ben MacRobbie earned a pair of assists in a losing cause.
The Stars are right back at it tonight (Saturday) as they take to the ice against the Legionnaires in Sarnia. It’s the season-opener for Sarnia. The game will be broadcast live on 94.1 myFM with the pre-game show starting at 7 p.m.
