The Ontario government introduced a new legislation Monday, that would protect, support and attract workers to the province.
If passed, Ontario would be the first province in Canada to make changes that would promote a healthy work-life balance, and would enable competitiveness by banning unfair non-compete agreements.
Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development introduced the Working for Workers Act, which would help make Ontario the top choice to live, work and raise a family. Minister McNaughton said on Monday, “today’s proposed legislation shows Ontario is ready to lead the way into the workplaces of tomorrow, and create the conditions that will make talented, innovative people want to work in our great province.”
The new legislation, along with prohibiting non-compete clauses, would require employers with over 25 employees to develop disconnecting from work policies, and prioritize workers mental health and family time.
But Green Party leader Mike Schreiner says he is skeptical of the Ford government’s motives to help workers when it earlier cancelled minimum wage increases and took away paid sick days.
