For the first half of tonight’s contest in Leamington, the St. Thomas Stars were enjoying the view from the driver’s seat.
Unfortunately a bunch of Flyers piled aboard for the final 30-minute ride and buried three straight goals to hand the Stars a frustrating 3-2 road loss, extending their winless streak to six games.
Despite being outshot 18-4 in the opening 20 minutes, St. Thomas escaped with a 1-0 lead on Mathieu Paris’ seventh tally of the season.
Midway through the second frame, Ben MacRobbie fired home his 10th goal to increase the Stars’ lead to 2-0.
How quickly the tide can turn, however, as a pair of Leamington goals in a five-minute span pulled the Flyers even after 40 minutes.
And Ryan MacPherson with his sixth of the campaign at 2:29 of the third period clinched the two points for the third-place Flyers.
A bitter pill to swallow for netminder Owen Willmore and the rest of the Stars.
St. Thomas drops into eighth place in the GOJHL Western Conference after Strathroy doubled up Sarnia 6-3. The Rockets pull a point ahead of St. Thomas.
The Stars are right back at it tomorrow evening when they host the the sixth-place LaSalle Vipers in a 7:30 start at the Joe Thornton Community Centre.
The teams have split their two encounters this season.
