It’s not the best of news for the inhabitants of Lake Margaret but it’s music to the ears of those who enjoyed a summer of fishing last year.
City council last week approved the continuation of non-motorized, recreational boating on Lake Margaret while voting down spending $13,000 on a Fish Community Assessment at Lake Margaret.
Coun. Gary Clarke argued the city hasn’t acted on recommendations from a study done three years ago.
The 2018 study noted there are several potential improvements the city could undertake to increase the available habitat and fish population in Lake Margaret if desired.
Had council approved the study, fishing in Lake Margaret would have been suspended next year and a report with recommendations would have come before council next December.
An action that would have made the city look foolish, suggested Clarke.
Under Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry regulations, no fishing is permitted from November 30 to the fourth Saturday in June each year.
