As the area’s medical officer of health pointed out in a briefing Wednesday, in spite of very high rates of vaccination, COVID-19 cases have skyrocketed.
Dr. Joyce Lock admitted, this is surprising to many and more than a bit discouraging.
However, she added, the vaccines are doing what they are intended to do.
Southwestern Public Health on Wednesday reported 18 hospitalizations across the region due to COVID-19 with five of those in ICU.
Lock, advised those in ICUs are generally unvaccinated.
She stressed the vaccines do not prevent you from becoming infected, instead they do lower your risk of serious illness, hospitalization and death.
The province reported 2081 individuals in hospital, and 288 in ICUs Wednesday. Health Minister Christine Elliott says 202 of the people in ICUs are not vaccinated or their vaccination status isn’t known.
