Freezing temperatures have hit the area, prompting the St. Thomas Fire Department to remind the public about the dangers that could occur while out on local waterways.
With more people utilizing places like Lake Margaret for skating with local facilities closed due to COVID-19, Chief Fire Prevention Officer Kim Destun says it’s important to know all the risks.
Because of this, she has provided a number of tips for staying as safe a possible while out near water.
While it’s important to never go out on the ice alone, Destun also notes that if someone you’re with does fall through the ice, do not attempt to rescue them.
She adds that it’s important to remember that no matter how cold it is outside, no ice is safe ice.
