Erin O’Toole has lost a vote to remain leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
In a video posted to social media, O’Toole says he formally stepped down from the party’s top job after he lost the support of his caucus in a 73 to 45 vote.
This comes after a leadership review was triggered, following weeks of anger and disappointment over O’Toole’s performance since last September’s federal election loss.
Candice Bergen will serve as the new interim leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
Conservative MPs chose the longtime Manitoba MP and deputy leader to take on the temporary role in a secret ballot Wednesday night.
O’Toole has said he will stay on as the MP Durham.
